Rob Findlay made some interesting observations while sitting at the pool bar in Bali. You can read about all of them on his blog, but the one that resonates most is the Vision Statement of the Intercontinental Hotel where he stayed.
Vision statements and Mission statements are too often difficult to understand, and therefore, meaningless. The vision statement pictured below is so simple, that every one gets it. And if the mission is so abstract and "pie in the sky" that the lowest ranking employee cannot connect their daily responsibilities to the mission, there may as well be no mission.
The mission statement of the Intercontinental Hotel is Bali is simple, clear and most important, actionable for every employee in the company. And clarity of vision and mission is what drives consistent, desirable action.
How clear is your company's vision?
